First look at the HP Mini 1000 netbook

James Kendrick is in the enviable position to be in Houston where HP has a significant presence and always seem to get his hands on the latest and greatest HP products. He just posted a very detailed first look at the newly announced HP Mini 1000 netbook that is the second model, the first was the HP 2133 Mini-Note, coming from HP. I considered the 2133 at one time, but the heat issues and rather high price tag for one with the specs I wanted turned me off. The new Mini 1000 has much better pricing options and that large 10.2 inch screen. Even though the display is larger, it has lower resolution (1024×600) than the Mini-Note (1280×768). I am using my MSI Wind on the road right now and 1024×600 is passable, but a bit higher would be much better for me personally.

The HP Mini 1000 currently only has a 3-cell battery, but a 6-cell option is coming. Some key differences that James noted are the loss of the ExpressCard slot, limit of 60GB hard drive, and no VGA port (there is a new port that requires an adapter). He does note that the Intel Atom processor and Windows XP are in use instead of the Via processor and Vista though. There is a new Mobile Internet Experience (MIE) function in the Linux model that looks quite functional for consumers. This is actually one of three models available or coming soon. The top of the line Windows XP model with 1GB RAM, 3-cell battery, 60GB hard drive, 10.2 inch display, WiFi, Bluetooth and web cam will cost US$499. The cheapest Linux model will be US$379 and the cheapest XP model is available now for US$399.99 so they are competitive on pricing and features.

New HP iPaqs invade Europe; no word on U.S. availability

On Tuesday, HP added two new iPaq smartphones to its portfolio. But before you go getting too attached, you should know that for the time being, they'll only be available in Europe. Partnering with Vodafone, the HP iPaq Data Messenger and the HP iPaq Voice Messenger will first be offered in the United Kingdom and then eventually make their way to the rest of Europe.

Will they ever reach the United States and join the HP iPaq 910c Business Messenger? Well, we asked our HP contact, who said she hasn't heard anything about a stateside release but would let us know as soon as she did. (Oh, if I had a nickel for every time I heard that phrase.)

For the curious, both the iPaq Data Messenger and the iPaq Voice Messenger offer a new five-away optical navigation button that provides a "gliding" sensation when scrolling through menus. The devices also have predictive text capabilities so they will learn a user's vocabulary and style when composing messages. Both smartphones run Windows Mobile 6.1 (Professional Edition on the Data Messenger and Standard on the Voice Messenger) and offer integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 3-megapixel camera.

While the two models share a lot of shared features, they have different focuses--if you couldn't tell by their names. The HP iPaq Voice Messenger is more of a phone-centric device and has a 2.4-inch QVGA non-touch display and 20-button keypad. Meanwhile, power business users might be more attracted to the HP iPaq Data Messenger and its slide-out QWERTY keyboard and touch screen. The Data Messenger will go for around 499 euros ($652), while the Voice Messenger is priced at 399 euros ($521).

HP Says No To US HP iPAQ 610 Business Navigator

HP officially said no to a US HP iPAQ 610 Business Navigator phone today. The HP iPAQ 610 has been around the rumor block for a while now, and with a lot of delays, apparently HP decided to call it quits on this handset - at least for the United States. So far there’s no indication of which countries will receive the handset.

In an announcement today, HP said: “due to recent legal issues between suppliers of mobile phone technologies, HP has decided not to offer the iPAQ 610 Business Navigator to US customers as previously planned.”

Here’s a rather swish looking HP. Having let us down a bit with HP iPaq 914, HP is fighting back with a take on the Touch Pro/Experia and it looks to be a smart looking phone. Check out the preview picture after the break.

The HP Oak, which has been leaked since early this year, is now ready for a release to European markets. The phone runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and features a sliding QWERTY keyboard in landscape format, not unlike the Touch Pro or Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. However, HP’s implementation will also feature a numberical dialpad on the front as well as an embedded directional pad on top of the number pad. The concept of the embedded directional pad is similar to that found on the HP iPAQ 600 series. According to IntoMobile, the phone is ready for a year-end launch.

There are rumors that Sony is preparing a new Walkman player for
announcement in CES 2009 with a touch screen that could compete with

Communicator based on Windows Mobile Professional 6.1, according to The
Wall Street Journal. Czech funds mysterious iDNES said that this
innovation can be HP OAK leaked, the first rumors that appeard at the
beginning of the year.

According to preliminary data, OAK HP is equipped with two keyboards
- digital and side-sliding QWERTY. Form factor is similar to the HTC
S710 (Vox), here there are only a touch screen display. Communicator

According to today’s Wall Street Journal, HP is getting ready to launch a brand new Communicator before the year’s end. Could this be the previously leaked HP OAK that we heard about at the beginning of this year?

From what I can tell, the HP OAK looks to be an HP touchscreen version of the HTC S710 (Vox) — with two keyboards (digital and side-sliding QWERTY). It’s rumoured to have HSDPA, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth, running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.

If you are a fan of Windows Mobile, I'm sure Coolsmartphone.com is on the list regularly read, it's on me, but they have terrible problems with an attack at the end of Google have been pretty much knocked them from the Internet . We are now 100% sure that we have found and the problem is eliminated. I would like forum member "sTeDay" for his help tonight, plus all the messages of support, help and concern you have to send through - it is very much appreciated. Although we have removed the problem I am slightly at a loss to explain how they got there. A message here on the first page was changed and an IFRAME had been added to the end of it pulling code from a nasty Web site that tries to infect your machine with EXE files from various other websites. Somehow it had also changed the forum post in connection with this same story, which is a little confusing, as our internal systems would not normally fire changes in the forum automatically.
The problem could also arise in the ads on the side of the site, so I have removed every single Flash and Java display. This obviously has a massive financial hit for us, but I'm well aware of the problems you guys were out and I want to make sure that it does not happen again. I have e-mails and comments from people who have had to re-format their machines and start again. Although I personally believe that anyone with the Internet should be an anti-virus (AV) system, I would like to personally apologize to all those who either do not update their AV, has not made use or AV-AV, that missed the Download trial.
If there is someone out there experience with this hack (which came from places klikvp.com among others), please give me a shout at gears@coolsmartphone.com. Although I have removed the offending code, I'm not able to handle any type of SQL injection in each log file on our main server, so I'm assuming it's a different kind of hack. Even if someone has any contact with Google, I would love to hear from you - I've just filled in a form in their webmaster tools and got this answer ...

Several weeks? It took only a few days to us and black block Firefox / Google chrome access. Several weeks would leave us dead in the water, so please help if you can. : (

Update - Thanks to everyone for your donations. I have in this bottom you should want to help, while we diagnose the problem. I've just done a thorough check with rkhunter and the good news is we have not had hacked into the server so it looks like an SQL injection of a sort possible.

HP Oak, Silver smartphone rumors resurface

HP is nearing the release of two important touchscreen phones previously only hinted at earlier in the year, according to a pair of reports. The Wall Street Journal now hints that one of HP's first true touchscreen-focused iPAQ smartphones is due in Europe as soon as two months from now; the report directly corroborates a leak early in the year of the Oak that reveals a hybrid touch and keyboard design intended for Vodafone. The earlier and more specific leak would give the phone a side-slider design with 7.2Mbps, HSDPA-based 3G as well as GPS and Wi-Fi.

As with recent iPAQ smartphones, the Oak is also said to be running Windows Mobile 6.1. The newspaper adds that the phone should be available worldwide after the European release but doesn't mention more specific dates or prices. The earlier leak had initially suggested a September launch at ₤260 in the UK (now $461) but now may change given the apparent delay.

Separately, Engadget has also obtained the first photos of the Silver, a candybar-style parallel to the Oak. It would lose the touchscreen and revert to a SureType-style keyboard while keeping the advanced 3G and Windows Mobile foundations of the larger and likely more costly Oak. It too is also slated for Vodafone, though its originally projected ₤250 ($443) price and July release date have since become inaccurate. A US launch is very likely for the Silver.

The WSJ.com reports that Hewlett Packard will release a new smartphone in the next two months, aiming to grow its device business beyond corporate users. The device will debut in Europe, and will be sold by a mobile carrier in retail stores.
Hopefully, as WMPowerUser hopes, “the device will be the HP Oak, which looks pretty tasty, and hopefully the device is more polished and less buggy than the trouble-some HP 910c.”

Fellow PC manufacturers Dell and Acer have been hinting their own plans to enter the smartphone industry. Acer even has been confirmed to start its brand new smartphone debut in Q1 2009.

The new device will have a touchscreen and keypad and will use Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, say people briefed on the plan. It will be able to send and receive emails, and access the Internet.

The phone is the latest version of H-P’s iPaq devices. H-P, which has been selling iPaq-branded devices since it acquired personal-computer maker Compaq Computer Corp. in 2002, primarily focused earlier iPaqs on businesses and typically didn’t sell them through retail stores.

This is an interesting move, as PC manufacturers seem to be hopping on the smartphone train of late. Look for Dell and Acer to enter the market as well, possibly as early as Q1 2009.
Reports have it that Hewlett Packard is working on a new smartphone for release before the end of the year. The new touchscreen smartphone initially dubbed the ‘HP Oak’ will be initially sold in Europe by carriers in their retail stores. Initial reports on this new device came out earlier this year… But it sounds like HP has finished their development and is getting ready to ship the device.

According to the leaked information, they will offer the HP Silver Windows

Nope, we’re not talking about a tree here! It looks as if the HP Silver won’t be the only HP handset sporting some HSUPA action. You now have a pretty decent line, with the Standard version, and now the Professional one making the rounds. The HP Oak sports a nifty slide-out QWERTY keyboard with a traditional number pad on the front, in addition to integrated GPS and Wi-Fi. We’re not really judging here, but it looks like you might have some difficulty with that 1010mAh battery. Release date? Thought you’d never ask! September, guys. What if instead of announcing the iPhone in January 2007 when it was still basically a pretty brick that didn't work (a huge risk if they hadn't been able to fix the product), Apple had instead waited until June and announced the product then?

Certainly, the buzz surrounding the phone would have continued and the risk of being sued for not disclosing that the phone wasn't even close to viable at the announcement would have been mitigated. This was a huge risk for Apple, which was already under SEC investigation, and while it played out for the company nicely there are few companies that are willing to take that risk.

HP would likely be at the top of the list when it comes to taking risks like this. While HP clearly had the same opportunity Apple had, and its product (based on Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Free Trial. Security Software As A Service From Webroot. Latest News about Microsoft Mobile platform) is vastly more complete than the iPhone was last January, it has apparently decided to hold off announcing the offering until later in the year, and the phone is still in the "rumor" stage as a result.

Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) Latest News about Vodafone, one of the carriers evidently launching the phone later in the year, evidently isn't that secure, however. Its entire fall line was leaked to the Web. One of those phones was HP's Oak, and it now takes the place of the iPhone for what is the most anticipated new phone coming to market. Granted, there is still the 3G Latest News about 3G iPhone and the expected iPhone nano -- at least one of which will show up this year (probably both) -- but for now the Oak seems to be the product to watch.

HP is about to announce the HP Silver and HP Oak smartphones with both devices on Vodafone later this year, both phones with be run via Windows Mobile 6. The HP Silver comes with Blackberry maker, RIM's, and SureType keyboard.

We just said that BGR's roadmap was the gift that keeps on giving and boy did we mean it. Next up: HP is taking another swing at Windows Mobile devices and this time they're going for the fences. That's a welcome sign after their previous bunts.

The highlight is definitely the Oak, a WM 6.1 Pro device with a touchscreen, quad-band HSDPA, bluetooth, gps, wifi, and a thin slider form factor that looks hottt with three Ts. The thin comes at a price, though, a measly 1010 mAh battery that they're optimistically claiming will last for 3.5 hours of talk time.

Next up is the Silver, which is interesting because not only does it look a heckuva lot like a BlackBerry Peal, but it also sports a "SureType" keyboard that they're calling a "suretype" keyboard -- perhaps it's been licensed from RIM? It has nearly identical specs as the above Oak (though they mysteriously left Bluetooth off the list. Surely an omission). It's WM6.1 standard and due in July.

HP OAK A new slider phone from HP thats not very different from the HTC slider phones in looks. It has GPS, Wi-Fi, HSUPA but has a simple 1010mAh battery on its specs seems this wont be a that reliable when it comes to power. It has the Windows mobile 6 OS
